'Global titans of technology' deprive working people of dignity, union leader says at Vatican

Frances O’Grady will call on the Catholic Church and trade unions to build 'a popular alliance for economic justice'

Inequality and the “new global titans of technology” are depriving working people of dignity, Britain’s trade union chief will tell Catholic and labour movement leaders at the Vatican today.

Frances O’Grady, the TUC general secretary, will call on the Catholic Church and trade unions to build “a popular alliance for economic justice”, in her speech this afternoon given at a meeting of international trade unionists and Catholic leaders in Rome.

Cardinal Peter Turkson will lead the two-day meeting which will hear testimony of injustices suffered by working people and consider how trade unions and the church can work together to achieve greater social justice.

O’Grady will warn of the harm done to UK workers by inequality and corporate power, including the “new global titans of technology” who she will describe as having “wealth and power beyond our imagination”.

“Technological change is concentrating wealth at the expense of working people,” she will say, and will refer to tax avoidance by global digital giants and to contemporary forms of worker exploitation. She will call on listeners to “challenge the very values on which our economies run.”

“The market should be our servant, not our master. Value cannot be measured in monetary terms alone. And individual greed must not triumph over the common good,” she will add.

O’Grady will encourage Catholic leaders to continue their history of supporting workers who take action to uphold their rights, using the example of Cardinal Manning who supported striking dockers in the 19th century. He described the refusal of employers to negotiate with their workers as a ‘public evil’.

She will call on Catholic leaders to work with trade unions, saying that together they can improve working lives and “put dignity for working people ahead of market forces and freedom of capital”. With shared values of community, dignity and social solidarity, the Catholic church and trade unions can together “build a popular alliance for economic justice, in Britain and around the world,” she will conclude.

Addressing Italian trade unions in June, Pope Francis said society did not understand the value of trade unions, because it has “forgotten” the social nature of economy and business.

“This is one of the greatest errors”, he said

Philatelist students to be eligible for scholarship

KOTA: Students who are collecting postage stamps as their hobby are now set to get annual scholarship of Rs 6,000 for the same. The Indian postal department in order to promote postage stamp collection as a hobby has come up with Deendayal Scholarship for Promotion of Aptitude and Research in Stamps as a Hobby (SPARSH). The instructions regarding the implementation of the scheme have been sent to respective superintendents of the circle in the state. A total of 920 students, 40 from each circle would be selected for the scholarship from across the country.
Under the scheme, annual scholarship of Rs 6,000 will be awarded to the students studying in classes between 6th and 9th and who have scored more than 60 percent marks in their respective previous classes. The students of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories have, however, been given relaxation with five percent and can apply to avail the benefit of the scheme with 55 percent marks in their last passed class.

At least 40 students would be selected from every circle through competitive selection process. The selection would be made on the basis of evaluation of project works on philately and performance in philately quiz conducted for the purpose in the circle.

The Indian Postal department is set to award a total of 920 scholarships to the students pursuing philately as a hobby.

The instructions regarding the scholarship scheme SPARSH were received from headquarters on Thursday, said Haneef Khan, superintendent, Indian Postal department, circle Kota. The strategy to encourage students' participation would be chalked out now, he said adding the scholarship scheme would largely promote postage stamp collection hobby among the students.

Some other officials of the postal department in Bundi and Tonk are, however, still unaware of the ambitious scheme of their department to promote philately as a hobby. When asked, assistant superintendent of the department in Bundi circle Hanuman Bairwa said he is not aware of such a scheme as no instructions on the same have been received so far. Superintendent, Tonk circle SR Rathore also expressed ignorance of the scholarship scheme.

Postal stamps released from time to time certainly embody historical, cultural and political background of the nation and scholarship on collecting the same would definitely boost students' awareness, knowledge on national background and would also aid them financially, said Suman Sharma, a senior teacher in government school.

Benefit extended to non-govt professionals

Tribune News Service
Amritsar, November 24

Residents can now avail themselves of postal life insurance at the General Head Post office, Amritsar, and Post office,Tarn Tarn. People can come and get themselves covered by the postal life insurance.

The facility was introduced in the British era in 1884 and was extended only to government officials. The postal authorities stated that there were a number of policies for the applicants.

One could take up policies depending on one’s age as well as the monetary situation of the individual. Anyone above the age of 18 can apply for insurance.

These policies are low on premium and offer a number of bonuses as compared to the others offered by other policy providers.

The employees listed under the national stock exchange and the Bombay stock exchange can also be entitled to the insurance, apart from others.

The residents need to carry a copy of their Aadhaar card, Pan card, two photographs, and a professional proof to avail themselves of the service.

One can visit the post office from 9 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday. Makhan Singh, Senior Superintendent, post office, Amritsar division, said, “We have expanded our clientele.

The move shall benefit the maximum number of people under postal life insurance. People shall have positive gains.
